Chapter Twenty-One

Chloe slipped out of bed, grabbed her knickers from amid the clothing littering the floor and slipped them on, moving quietly to the bathroom and leaving Nick Spokes in her bed. Sleeping beauty.

She peed and drank from the tap, the salty take-out pizza probably more responsible for her thirst than a mild hangover from the wine. She straightened up and the bathroom mirror threw back an unwanted portrait.

Kara’s voice echoed from some crevasse deep in her head.

That’s a nice-looking guy you got in your bed back there. Begs the question, what’s he doing with you?

She resisted the urge to picture her absent sister, a big smirk plastered on her face. Failed. For Kara, boyfriends had always been a matter of selection. At school, she all but had a list to pick from. Chloe not so much. The contrast between Kara and herself had always been conspicuous, with the common response since childhood being, “Really? Sisters?”

Chloe’s boyfriends during her secondary school days numbered exactly two, with the longest of these romances lasting three months. She had attended prom with a boy who was a friend, but not a boyfriend. She had dated a handful of guys since but had never been one of those women men cricked their necks to grab a look at in the street. Kara had been.

For sisters, even half-sisters, they didn’t look much alike. Where Chloe was pale, wrapped in skin determined to burn on any sufficiently sunny day and promptly peel in as unattractive a fashion as it could manage afterwards, Kara’s skin tone was warmer, almost Mediterranean, and obligingly tanned to an even mocha brown with scarcely a lick of limp sunshine.

The differences didn’t end there.

Kara’s hair was fair and obedient, agreeable to being cut and coloured into whichever style was most popular. Chloe’s hair was an unruly mess of curls, fighting to stick up and out every which way, and outdoing itself in the present moment. Nick had run his hands through it in the throes of passion, which was admittedly hot as fuck in the moment, but in aftermath made her look like a cartoon character who had hung onto a stick of Acme dynamite that crucial second too long.

Kara’s eyes were a sumptuous honey brown. Chloe’s were dark and inclined to be surrounded by shadows even when feeling at her most refreshed.

Kara rocked curves that would have caused Cat Woman to consider stuffing her bra with tissues. Chloe wasn’t totally flat chested, but more sparingly endowed in the tit and bum department than she would wish.

“I thought you’d disappeared?” Chloe said.

The imaginary Kara standing behind her in the bathroom mirror rolled her eyes, the message clear. Jeez, Chloe, learn to take a joke for once.

Chloe hadn’t meant to speak aloud. She waited, ear cocked, half expecting Nick’s voice to call, “What?” but it didn’t.

Imaginary Kara merely raised an eyebrow, more amused than offended.

Chloe turned her back on her. The mirror she left behind. Kara not so much. Instead of returning to bed she diverted to the kitchen and poured herself a tall glass of juice.
